Joey Scandizzo, South Yarra

Three times Australian Hairdresser of the Year in a row, Joey Scandizzo’s busy and bright trendy Toorak Road salon sits in the fashionable and affluent area of Melbourne’s South Yarra. Formerly known as the successful Rokk Ebony, Scandizzo shocked the hairdressing world when he changed the Salon’s name and decor (to a more modern and fresh look) four years ago and took over the business with two other partners. A bit of a family affair, brother John also works for the Salon.

Scandizzo, 35, who is married with a toddler son, is well-known in the glamorous world of celebrity, having styled top models and actresses for years. Regular clients include Ruby Rose, Kate Peck, Rebecca Maddern and Buddy Franklin. He is also proving a mentor to Australia’s youth and enjoys an international TV (Beauty and the Geek and Project Runway) and radio reputation. More recently he launched his own set of luxury hair and body products, known as Eleven and which are PETA approved (ie they’re not tested on animals) and are available to purchase in the salon. But you’ll also find his salon also stocks the upmarket brands Wella Professional, ONYX Face & Body and Kevin Murphy.

Visit the salon and you’ll find it has a rather trendy and edgy feel to it. In fact, you can be sure the Scandizzo team are well onto what’s hot in the world of hair before even the magazines are (for a start, Joey is often drafted in to style those editorial shoots). Despite this time-consuming fashion focus, the Joey Scandizzo Salon persists with its five-star luxury appeal where all customers receive a signature hand massage and undivided attention, as well as the offer of tea or coffee the minute they sit down in one of the comfortable salon leather seats.

The Salon prides itself on its team of hair ‘experts,’ having also picked up the title Salon Team of the Year. Other accolades the team have won in recent times includes HAIR EXPO New Creative Force Winner2015 (Hermiz Daniel) and AHFA Victorian Hairdresser of the Year 2015 (Joseph Semaan). The team have also picked up a whole host of colouring accolades.

Male friends and partners may be interested to know that the Kings Domain Barber Shop across the road from the Toorak Road Salon is also part of the Joey Scandizzo empire. One regular client includes international footballer Christian Ronaldo, no less.

    I had a similar experience. Terrible service. Arrogant, rude staff. Ruined my hair and colour. Asked for a brown shades instead got a mousy dark colour that was uneven and in pAtches. Stripped off my previous colour without asking. Asked for layers instead got a 5 min trim with uneven hair cut. Cost me $400. Worst place – over priced and uninspiring. The colourist made no effort, asked her apprentice to apply colur with no supervision. Terrible experience never going back. Overhyped and underwhelming
